MDIS History

MDIS started as SAMTAS, the Supervisory and Management Training Association of Singapore. It was formed in April 1956 and Dato’ Loke Wan Tho was SAMTAS’ first President.

The primary focus then was to address industrial relations of the Singapore workforce and in training supervisors on subjects ranging from job relations to industrial safety

SAMTAS’ long-term objective of forming the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) was undertaken by the Management Training Committee comprising SAMTAS, Economic Development Board, University of Singapore, Nanyang University, Singapore Polytechnic, Adult Education Board, Joint Chambers of Commerce and the Singapore Manufacturers Association.

Upon SIM’s formation in 1964, Mr Tan Hoay Gie, former SAMTAS Patron and Trustee was appointed by the Board of Governors as a representative from SAMTAS.

Throughout the early years of SIM, SAMTAS was represented by its Executive Committee, and was actively involved in the joint organisation of seminars and other activities.

In 1964, SAMTAS received recognition from the government as a training body and was tasked to host with six other organisations a national seminar on Management Development and Performance.

In 1970, the second national management seminar, the Strategy for the Development of Managers was officially launched by the Minister for Finance, Mr Hon Sui Sen and jointly organised by seven organisations.

In 1975, SAMTAS conducted the Certificate in Industrial Management course in collaboration with the Institution of Works Managers (IWM), UK.

In 1976, SAMTAS partnered the Lancastrian School of Management (LSM), UK in offering the Certificate in Supervisory Management course to meet the great demand of Singaporeans to upgrade themselves.

In conjunction with the Lancastrian School of Management (LSM), UK, SAMTAS launched the Certificate in Management Studies awarded by both SAMTAS and LSM.

On 8 February 1984, SAMTAS was officially renamed the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS). The new MDIS logo was launched at the inaugural ceremony held in 1985.

From 1986 to 1989, MDIS collaborated with prestigious universities from UK, USA and Australia to offer certified courses. In line with adult learners’ training needs, business management courses were launched in 1987.

In 1989, the MBA and postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies with the University of East London, UK, was launched. For the first time, the British Technician Council (BTEC) gave approval for the Certificate in Management Studies course to be conducted in Asia.

MDIS initiated several mass communications programmes with the Oklahoma City University, including the Masters of Arts in Mass Communications, the first of its kind in Singapore in 1992.

MDIS also launched the several business management programmes with the University of Bradford, UK.

The MDIS Education Trust Fund was initiated in 1996 and MDIS scholarships and bursaries were awarded from the Trust Fund. The scholarships were awarded to members of the four self-help groups and the HomeTeamNS to pursue pre-degree programmes whilst bursaries were offered to students from Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges, Institutes of Technical Education and Polytechnics.

The decade starting 2000 saw significant developments in numerous areas. Bringing education to students’ doorsteps, seven lifelong training centres were strategically located across Singapore offering programmes in various disciplines.

International Expansion began with invitation to help develop the manpower talent in Uzbekistan and was quickly followed up with the foray into Johor Malaysia at Educity.
